Case study:

Meet Levi.

Levi recalls having an extremely difficult time in school during his youth. This was especially true with maths which led to something of a phobia around the subject.

After joining a maths course at MAES to overcome this, Levi was assessed for exam access arrangements by the Learning Support Team in 2022, which he admits made him feel validated because his difficulties were acknowledged, and support was put in place. Levi was able to trial his access arrangements in mock exams: “This really helped me as I knew what to expect in the real exams”.

Levi also had 1:1 lessons alongside his maths course. “The extra lessons with Vin were really useful because it gave me time to clarify topics I didn’t understand the first time around in class.”

Reflecting on the Level 1 / Level 2 intensive maths course, Levi felt “the lessons were sometimes overwhelming but I still enjoyed coming to class. Abdi [his tutor] was very patient, kind and helpful, especially when I felt annoyed with the maths in class”.

With the support of his tutor and the Learning Support team, Levi passed his Level 1 and Level 2 intensive maths course and progressed on to GCSE Maths.
