The Level 3 Award in English for Literacy and Language Teaching is a great course if you’re looking to develop your English skills to meet the entry requirements for a subject-specific teaching qualification in literacy and ESOL.
The course is also complemented by our Level 3 Award in Education and Training courses and progression routes to the Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (Further Education and Skills).
On this course, you will study the following four mandatory units:
Reading Skills for Literacy and Language Teaching: In this unit, you will explore topics such as identifying the purpose of texts, reading ‘between the lines’ and how linguistic devices are used by writers both implicitly and explicitly.
Analysing English Language for Literacy and Language Teaching: This unit will help you to understand how grammar is a collection of principles defining how to put together a sentence. You will learn about different word classes, verb forms and tenses.
Speaking and Listening Skills for English Literacy and Language Teaching: You will learn all about how being a confident speaker is essential for a career in teaching. In this unit, you will have the opportunity to research, prepare for and take part in a variety of discussions and research, and prepare and deliver a presentation.
Writing Skills for Literacy and Language Teaching: In this final unit you will discover how to write effectively and for a variety of reasons and audiences, and why this a key skill. You will have the chance to successfully plan and proofread a variety of texts, plan and write texts for a variety of audiences and use linguistic devices effectively in a variety of texts.
This course is delivered face-to-face in a classroom at one of our adult learning centres.
For this course, ongoing formative assessment will take place. At the end of each module, you will be required to complete a formal, written assessment. You will also need to complete two speaking and listening assessments.
You must pass all four assessments to successfully complete the course.
For this course, you will need to have achieved GCSE English in grade 5 (C) or above. If you do not have proof of these qualifications, an assessment to demonstrate English skills at this level is an essential requirement.
You must also be digitally confident to enable the completion of assignments.
