Course details
By taking the Level 1 Award in Preparing to Work in Schools course, you will develop your knowledge of the teaching and learning environment in schools. This qualification is suitable for a wide range of learners, including young people and mature individuals working towards employment in the school setting.
The Level 1 Award in Preparing to Work in Schools consists of the following three mandatory units:
Understand schools as organisations: In this unit, you will learn all about schools as organisations, including the different types of schools, the policies and procedures applicable to schools and finally, the different areas of learning in schools.
Understand how to keep children and young people healthy, safe and well: The second unit will introduce you to topics such as the main stages of development from birth to 19 years of age, how to keep individuals safe in the learning environment, healthy eating and equality, diversity and inclusion.
Understand how to communicate with children, young people and adults: In this final unit, you will learn about how to communicate effectively with children, young people and adults within a team and how to encourage individuals in a learning environment.
This course is mainly delivered face-to-face in a classroom at our adult learning centres, however, there is an option to join an online class.
All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods, which could include written assignments or tasks such as designing a leaflet or booklet, charts or diagrams, or setting up an information board.
To be eligible for this course, you must have an Entry 3 English and maths qualification.
You will also need access to a device (laptop or computer) at home. You can apply to our Chromebook loan system if you do not have a suitable device.

Career and progression routes
Following this course, you could be ready to progress onto the Level 2 Award in Support Work in Schools and Colleges or the Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning.
