Course details
The Level 3 Diploma in Counselling is designed for those who are interested in using counselling skills as part of their functional role or who are looking to progress towards accredited counsellor status with one of the counselling professional accrediting bodies.
While this qualification does not qualify learners to practise as a counsellor, it will aim to provide you with more in-depth knowledge of the use of counselling skills in everyday life and work, and the approaches that underpin the use of these skills.
On this course, you will study the following five mandatory units:
Developing counselling skills: In this unit, you will get the opportunity to identify, practise and develop a range of interpersonal and counselling skills which allows you to become aware of the skills required to initiate, maintain and conclude a counselling skills interaction.
Theoretical approaches in the use of counselling skills: In the second unit of this course, you will learn all about the main theoretical approaches to counselling and how to apply these in practice.
Working ethically with counselling skills: This unit gives you the opportunity to gain an understanding of the context within which counselling skills and referral processes can be used whilst maintaining ethical standards.
Counselling skills and diversity: The fourth unit of this course focuses on counselling skills and diversity. You will learn to understand and appreciate the implications of applying counselling skills in a diverse society by looking at topics such as discrimination.
Counselling skills and personal development: The final unit covers counselling skills and personal development. You will identify your own development needs, look at the process of personal development, understand group dynamics and explore the impact of personal development on others.
This course is delivered face-to-face in a classroom at our adult learning centres. You will participate in group and pair work activities and discussions that will develop your counselling skills and self-awareness.
For this course, you will be required to create a portfolio of evidence meeting the assessment criteria for the qualification and take part in assessed skills practice where you will take turns at being the counsellor, client and observer.
To be eligible for this course, you will have completed the Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills.
You must be able to speak, read and write English confidently at Level 2.
