The Community Interpreting Stage 1 course is ideal for adults who are interested in developing the skills required to become an interpreter/translator.
On this course, you will develop your awareness of the English language and knowledge, your understanding of community, public service and voluntary organisations where interpreters might work, and the role of the community interpreter and some basic specialism knowledge.
On this course, you will learn about the following:
- the skills and qualities required for an interpreter
- the ethics of interpreting
- professional practice in interpreting
- key vocabulary terms required in some of the most common places you may be expected to interpret.
This course is delivered online and as such access to a device (laptop or computer) at home is required, as well as a quiet study space and good internet connection. You can apply to our Chromebook loan system if you do not have a suitable device.
For this course, you will be required to create a portfolio of evidence meeting the assessment criteria for the qualification.
Throughout the course, you will participate in a mixture of individual, pair and group tasks, self and tutor evaluation of performance. The tutor will provide feedback on your performance and suggest how you can improve further. You will also have to complete homework tasks on the course and will have access to additional online support and practice.
To be eligible for this course, you must have Entry 3 or above English skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing and a similar level of ability in at least one other community language, including the ability to read and write a second language.
