Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships that work for everyone
Shape your future with hands-on, real-world experience while working towards a nationally recognised qualification. Our apprenticeship programmes are a great way to develop skills and knowledge for a wide range of industries.
What is an apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a work-based training programme where learners (apprentices) earn while they learn. Apprenticeships combine practical on-the-job experience with a structured off-the-job training plan, which then leads to a nationally recognised qualification.
Apprenticeships at Manchester Adult Education are available in a range of sectors including business administration, health and social care, leadership and management and teaching. They’re suitable for school leavers*, career changers and existing employees looking to upskill.
*Level 3 Business Administration (16-19 years) is a programme designed specifically for the Manchester City Council School Leavers project – not external learners.

Apprenticeships facts and mythbusting
You may have lots of questions when it comes to apprenticeships, let’s clear things up…
Apprenticeships are fully or partially funded depending on your circumstances.
For Learners: There are no fees – your training is paid for by your employer and/or government funding. Plus, you’ll earn at least the apprenticeship minimum wage, which often increases as you progress.
For Employers: The following funding policies apply:
- Levy-paying employers (payroll over £3m) can use their Apprenticeship Levy to fund training.
- Non-levy employers only contribute 5% of the training costs; the government covers the remaining 95%.
- Incentives may be available for hiring young apprentices or upskilling current staff.
Speak to us to understand your funding eligibility.
All apprentices are entitled to off-the-job training. It’s essential to apprenticeship success and makes up 20% of the programme.
Off-the-job training includes:
- Workshops or classroom learning
- Online modules
- Assignments and projects
- Coaching or mentoring sessions
- Shadowing or industry visits
This time is protected, is separate from day-to-day duties and must take place during normal working hours. It ensures apprentices gain a full understanding of their role and the wider industry.
On-the-job training takes place in the workplace and is key to learning real skills in a real working environment.
It includes:
- Performing job tasks under supervision
- Learning company processes and tools
- Developing core competencies
- Receiving feedback from managers and mentors.
This practical experience is what sets apprenticeships apart from traditional learning.
