Course details
This course will teach you the essential IT skills and knowledge that you will need in the workplace. Whether your aim is to secure a new role or progress in work, you can develop your practical IT office skills and improve your working knowledge of industry standard software and common applications. Word processing, presentation and spreadsheet software are covered in this course.
The first part of this course includes 5 units at Level 1 Essential Digital Skills before progressing onto higher level learning in word processing software and spreadsheet software. For the Level 2 word processing software , you will develop your ability to maximise the tools available to prepare, process and produce a wide range of sophisticated and professional documents accurately and efficiently. For the Level 2 spreadsheet software, you will develop an understanding of tools and techniques to be able to produce spreadsheets. You will learn how to apply advanced formulae and functions to process data and use automated tools to aid productivity.
The five units taught for the Level 1 section include:
- Using devices and handling information – You will learn how to manage and store information, and identify and solve simple technical issues.
- Creating and editing – You will learn how to use different applications to edit, enhance and format different types of information using word processing, presentation and spreadsheet applications.
- Communicating – You will gain an awareness and be able to use digital communications for a range of contexts and purposes.
- Transacting – You will learn to compare products against other available online options and manage transactional account settings.
- Being safe and responsible online – you will learn about the importance of digital wellbeing and about being responsible online. This will involve privacy and data protection, conducting best practice online behaviour, backing up data, and understanding the psychological health risks of online activity.
This course is delivered face-to-face in a classroom at our adult learning centres.
You can gain two nationally recognised qualifications on this course: Level 1 Essential Digital Skills and Level 2 Digital and IT Skills with Gateway Qualifications.
You will sit an exam at the end of the Level 1 Essential Digital Skills course content and submit a portfolio of evidence for the Level 2 Digital and IT Skills qualification.
The Level 1 exam comprises practical assessments (skills) and multiple choice questions (knowledge). You will do 2 mock exams for Level 1 in preparation for the final exam. You will build a portfolio of evidence during the Level 2 course.
- You should be qualified at Entry 3 Essential Digital Skills and/or be able to evidence acquisition of Entry 3 Digital Skills
- You should be able to demonstrate Level 2 English skills (speaking, reading, and writing)
- You should have experience of using a computer and/or laptop and the internet
- You will ideally have access to a device (laptop or computer) at home. You can apply to our Chromebook loan system if you do not have a suitable device
The course has massively brought me in different tasks to work on it and learn much more about IT skills. This is such a good course.

Career and progression
Following this course, you may wish to progress onto our Level 1 Tech Skills for Work pathways in Cybersecurity and Programming. You could also join a Microsoft for Work course or a Level 2 award in Networking. You may also secure employment with your improved digital skills.
